Quantitative Market by Sector Ranking

The ability to comprehensively rank equity sector attractiveness according to key metrics - including MarketScalpel's proprietary value-added sector data - is a core feature of the Market Navigator online research platform.

Sub-Sector & Industry Group Screening

The Sector Overview Tables are the primary tool for accessing detailed quantitative ranking data on the 103 lowest level industry groups (in aggregate representing 100 percent of the total market cap).

As such they complement the Sector Heatmaps in terms of greater industry granularity, as well as presenting ranking data in an easy to sort tabular format, enabling rapid scanning and screening of sectors, for example to identify sectors where momentum or contrarian opportunities exist.

Sector Ranking & Identifying Leadership

The Sector Overview Tables contain core ranking metrics for assessing sector leadership (both upside and downside) grouped into three distinct areas organized in separate tables:

  • Summary Overview Table:

Proprietary Volume Conformation Signals and Ranking, Sector Performance (1-day, 1-week and 1-month and 3-month sector returns), Relative Volume (1-day, 1-week, and 1-month volume versus the 1-year average), sector Beta Correlation & Volatility versus the All Stocks Index, and Volatility
  • Sector Breadth & Internals Table:

Number of constituents by Sector, daily breadth, percent of sector constituents at 52-week highs/lows, percent of constituents above key moving averages of their respective shareprices (10-day, 25-day, 50-day and 200-day), 1 week change in the preceding metric
  • Sector Cycle Projections:

Two dominant trading cycles are extracted in each sector via Spectral Analysis (long & short). For each cycle length the following data are provided: Length (in trading days), cycle confidence level (fit), and estimated number of days to projected cycle tops and bottoms

Detailed information on the calculation of ranking metrics is provided in the Market Navigator context sensitive help; click the blue question mark in the main window top right-hand corner.

Using the Sector Overview Tables

The Sector Overview Tables are accessed by clicking the 'Sector Overview' button in the main analysis tool selector area of the Market Navigator controls (see A2 in the controls overview).  Click the Display Option selector drop-down menu to change the table view (see previous column bottom).

Use the Region Option Selector drop-down menu in the controls section (see C in the controls overview) to select the desired sector sub-set; US, Non-US or Global (US & Non-US) sector universes.

Click on any table heading to sort the table according to that metric in descending order.  Click the same heading again to sort in ascending order.

Click on any sector name to view a sector chart, displayed according to the last chart option viewed (see B in the controls overview), referenced by the selected region.  In certain cases where a Non-US sector has no constituents, the chart view will default to the Global Sector (here identical to the US sector).

Use the copy icon in the main window top right-hand corner to copy the contents of a table to the clipboard for pasting into a spreadsheet for further analysis (Internet Explorer only).  Firefox users wishing to access this functionality please install the Table2Clipboard add-on.

Identifying Momentum & Contrarian Opportunities

The main Sector Overview Table can be detached into a separate window for rapid screening of sectors, by clicking 'Detach Body' in the control panel (see E in the controls overview).

In this way when a sector name is clicked in the new window the last viewed chart option will be displayed in the original window, enabling rapid visual review of multiple sectors for attractive investment opportunities.

Clients can then optionally click the Sector Stocks button (see A4 in the controls overview) to display a table of sector components containing key evaluation metrics that may be used to screen potential investment candidates for further analysis.
